While re-organizing the kitchen in preparation for our renovations, I moved a box of household cleaners from its former home under the sink to the laundry room, where the rest of our cleaners live. It wasn't until this consolidation that I realized just HOW MANY scary chemicals we've been keeping in our home. We have bottles of stuff for stoves, for sinks, for toilets, for windows, for carpets, for drains -- and most of them are chemical overkill. I cleaned my kitchen -- the place I prepare food in -- with substances that I don't even want to breathe. I'd felt dubious about normal household cleansers for quite a while, but figured I would just use up the ones we had and then replace them with more environmental options. Now, though, I've started to feel more immediate about it. I want these things GONE. There's no need to have them in the same house as me and my husband and my dog. I'm ready to switch to safer and more environmentally responsible cleaners... but... umm... the question is, how? What do I do with these, and what do I replace them with? This is me officially soliciting recommendations.

Out with Spencer for his morning walk, I passed David Rogers Park. It had been a while since I'd taken Spence into the park, since there are usually quite a few off-leash dogs there, which makes me nervous. Today, though, the park was quiet, and we're having BEAUTIFUL spring weather, so we went in.

One of the things I love about dogs is their enthusiasm. Everything is SO COOL! And Spencer has this enthusiasm in spades, especially come springtime. He sniffs the ground. He sniffs the air. He chases crows and squirrels, and just generally enjoys the feel of grass and earth under his feet (it must be a nice change from concrete sidewalks) -- and so do I.

Sometimes when it's cold and rainy, walking the dog feels like a chore. But on nice days like today, it's more like playtime.

So I was walking home from the grocery store today when, because I'm a big dork, I started thinking about last night's closet shot and wondering how I could recreate it in the daytime. I wanted to make it look like the closet and the outside room were filled with natural daylight, even though in reality the only window is the one behind my head.

I wanted the view from the window exposed properly, so I found those settings, then began to play with the flash I have inside the closet. The most natural-looking light dispersion occurred when I lowered the diffuser on the flash and set it close to the upper corner of the closet (my right; camera left). I got the power levels right, but found the light looked just a little too blue for me, so I decided to gel it to make it slightly warmer. 1/4 CTO was too orange; even 1/8 was a little too much. But I remembered David Hobby mentioning that you could always put a gel only halfway over your flash to dilute the effect, so that's what I did, in effect creating 1/16 CTO and getting the color, as Goldilocks said, juuuuust right.

The last step was illuminating the wall outside the closet. This was the easiest part; I bounced a second flash off of a white "reflector" (read: piece of foam core) and onto the wall, blocking the camera-right side with another piece of foam core to keep that flash out of the closet and avoid over-lighting myself. I had to crank up the power a bit on this flash, but after a couple of tweaks I got a level I was happy with there, too.

All in all this took maybe 15 minutes (including scrounging around trying to figure out where I had left my second flash), and I got a result I'm very happy with. Now, to be <s>disciplined</s> not-lazy enough to keep practicing my lighting on a regular basis....

Stuff I Am Guilty Of

So I was recently introduced, by my friend Sean, to the blog "Stuff White People Like" - the blog "devoted to stuff that white people like." Ayup. Though the name makes one raise an eyebrow, it's actually funny and often well-observed social commentary, and if you're white, and ever for a moment thought that you WEREN'T a ridiculous, pseudo-intellectual prat, I encourage you to go read for a bit, and be humbled.

Anyhow, as Sean and I were laughing over the blog, he suggested that an amusing - if self-deprecating - hour or two could be passed by listing all of the entries that apply to oneself. Always eager to knock myself down a few levels, I gave it a go, and below I present the highlights.

***

Stuff Brittney Likes

#84 - T-Shirts

The most prized t-shirt category is vintage.... The ideal shirt will have a funny logo, a year attached to it, and will be as thin as rice paper. In the event that two white people have shirts that meet this criteria, the superior ranking is given to the person who paid the least for the shirt.

#26 - Manhattan (now Brooklyn too!)

If you are in group setting and the topic of New York City comes up, find the highest ranking white person and say 'oh, are you from New York?' To them, this means you are calling them cultured, cool, and urban. They will respond with something like 'oh, well, I’ve spent a lot of time there,' or 'I lived there for three years.' You will have instantly become more popular than all other people in the group.

#19 - Traveling

Upon returning home, they will... find an affinity for a particular beer or liquor from a country they visited. They use this as an excuse to mention their travels when at a bar. “Oh, I’ll have a Czechznlishiyush Pilsner. You see, that was my favorite beer when I was travelling through Slovenia and the Czech republic.”

#64 - Recycling

If you are in a situation where a white person produces an empty bottle, watch their actions. They will first say “where’s the recycling?” If you say “we don’t recycle,” prepare for some awkwardness. They will make a move to throw the bottle away, they will hesitate, and then ultimately throw the bottle away. But after they return look in their eyes. All they can see is the bottle lasting forever in a landfill, trapping small animals. It will eat at them for days, at this point you should say “I’m just kidding, the recycling is under the sink. Can you fish out that bottle?” And they will do it 100% of the time!

#15 - Yoga

It gives white people the chance to showcase their $80 pants.

#75 - Threatening to Move to Canada

Though they will never actually move to Canada, the act of declaring that they are willing to undertake the journey is very symbolic in white culture. It shows that their dedication to their lifestyle and beliefs are so strong, that they would consider packing up their entire lives and moving to a country that is only slightly different to the one they live in now.

So there you have it, the highlights of my whitey Hall of Shame. Before you go, though, I would like to add that it is not just me; I have come to the conclusion while reading this blog that, omg, Seattle is the whitest city in the ENTIRE WORLD. So it's clearly not my fault.
